KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen has set his sights on securing a place in the AFC Cup Round of 16 as the Kolkata giants prepare to host Maldives’ Maziya Sports and Recreation Club in Group E on Wednesday.
Mohun Bagan and Maziya S&RC sit six points behind the group leaders Bengaluru FC and with both sides looking to cement a top-two position at the midway stage, it will be a cracker of a game at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.
However, with an eye on the virtual domestic title decider against Aizawl FC this weekend, Sen would not be starting with some of his important players as he decided to rest the likes of Sony Norde, Darryl Duffy, Debjit Majumder, Pritam Kotal, Anas Edathodika, Eduardo Ferreir and Sehnaj Singh keeping in mind the I-League.
“it’s obvious that our primary target is winning the I-League, but at the same time we want do well in AFC Cup. This is not the first time that we are missing some players, so it will not be a problem for us, in fact it will be a challenge for the players who replace them,” he said.
Maziya, on the other hand, have been regular participants in the continental competition since 2013, but have yet to get past the group stage.
The Dhivehi premier League champions’ new coach Marjan Sekulovski is keen on playing a more passing game. The team thrives on their strong defense with the new addition of Romanian Andrei Cordoș. His partner Amdhan Ali is also physically tough and strong in air. Captain Asadhulla Abdulla will also be a player to watch out for being the top scorer in Dhivehi premier League over the last three seasons.
“Our main target is to win this match, we are not looking to the positives and negatives of the opposition team,” said Sekulovski.
Both teams last faced off in 2016 AFC Cup, after beating the islanders 5-2 at home, Mohun Bagan managed to play out a 1-1 darw in away leg.
