KOLKATA: With less than a four days to go for the 2016-17 I-League, Aizawl FC have strengthened their roster by signing Ashutosh Mehta and Jayesh Rane for remainder of the season.
THIF have learnt that Aizawl FC coach Khalid Jamil — who parted way with Mumbai in 2016 having spent seven seasons — is the main reason behind Ashutosh and Jayesh’s decision to leave Mumbai, as both the players came into prominence under Jamil’s coaching.
Ashutosh, a highly versatile footballer who provides solidity at the back and creativity while going forward. Ashutosh has been an I-League regular for Mumbai since making his senior debut in 2011. He has also turned out for FC Pune City and Mumbai City FC in ISL.
Speaking exclusively to THIF Ashutosh stated, “Khalid Sir has been one of the most important people in my playing career. Not just because of what i have learnt and learning in sporting terms but also in human ones as well and when he asked me and Jayesh to join Aizawl FC we just couldn’t refuse.”
Jayesh, on the other hand, has joined Mumbai FC youth set-up in 2008. He had to wait for four years before making his senior debut in 2012. Since then he slowly came through the ranks and became one of the key players for Mumbai. Jayesh joined ISL franchise Chennaiyin FC on loan from Mumbai in 2014. While playing for Chennaiyin, he has won ISL in 2015. He was also a member of the India U23 team that won silver medal in men’s football at 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati.
