KOLKATA: East Bengal will look to return to the winning ways when they take on Tollygunge Agragami in their penultimate game of the Calcutta Football League at East Bengal Ground on Tuesday.
East Bengal, who are currently on second position in the table with 19 points from 7 matches, need to win against Tollygunge, who are sixth with 7 points, to go level on points with Mohun Bagan heading into the season’s first Kolkata Derby on Sunday, what would decide where the CFL title will be going this season.
The Read and Golds were lucky to hold Mohammedan Sporting Club to a 2-2 draw in their previous match to keep themselves to second place with 19 points from seven matches, three point and one match less than table topper Mohun Bagan.
Thus, East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil hopes his team would not repeat the mistakes tomorrow as anything less than three points against Tollygunge means their chances of emerging as the champions are considerably lessened.
Speaking ahead of the match, Jamil said, “The last game against Mohammedan SC was a tough one. We had our chances but at the end it was our mistakes that proved costly, however we have closed the chapter on the previous match and want to focused on the task at hand.”
“The game against Tollygunge will not be a easy one. They are strong side with a vastly experienced coach. It will be a competitive match, but we are keen to be on the winning side.” Jamil added.
On the team news front, Jamil is expected to shuffle his starting line-up as Gurwinder Singh and Gabriel Fernandes could possibly return into the starting XI while Salam Ranjan Singh is likely to fill in for Samad Ali Mallick, who is unavailable due to suspension, following his two yellow cards earlier in the league.
