KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan will seek to notch up a win over Peerless Sports Club and brighten their Calcutta Football League title hopes when the two sides clash on Monday.

With 19 points from 7 matches, Mohun Bagan currently level on points with East Bengal heading into the penultimate match of their campaign. However, courtesy a better goal difference East Bengal are placed number one in the points table.

Mohun Bagan passed a stern test of their title credentials against Mohammedan Sporting Club in dramatic fashion last week, with Azaharuddin Mallick came to the rescue netting a injury time winner.

Nonetheless, Mohun Bagan coach Sankarlal Chakraborty is firm in his belief that his team has the potential to end the 7-year wait for CFL title.

“We are aware of Peerless’ strengths this year. They have some fine attacking players. We have prepared ourselves well and the boys are raring to go.” Coach Sankarlal said at the end of an intense training session on the eve of the clash.

Coach Sankarlal has also cautioned the players against complacency and said: “We cannot afford to drop our guard. We realize the importance of this match and the eventual bearing it could have on the league table but I don’t believe in putting undue pressure on my players and have asked them to treat it like any other game.”

The gaffer has every right to feel confident given that he will have the entire squad available for selection.

Going into the game, Mohun Bagan will look forward to the strike pair of Ansumana Kromah and Bayi Kamo Stephane for inspiration. However, Kamo has failed to score in last three matches which would place even greater responsibility on Kromah.

On the other hand, Peerless, who are in fourth position with 9 points from 5 games, will be eager to upset the mighty Mohun Bagan to give themselves a chance to make a top three finish ousting Mohammedan SC.

The Fuja Tope-coached side will be hoping for an inspiring performance from 2012 AIFF Player of the Year Syed Rahim Nabi in order to lift the morale of the side.

The Nigerian mastermind will hope his midfield to dish out a compact display and control right from the beginning. And for that to happen, the likes of Shahrukh Rahman, Sukhwinder Singh and Dipankar Das will have to identify and exploit the chinks in Mohun Bagan’s armour and link up well with Ivorian striker Leonce Dodoz.

For the record, last time when these two faced off the match ended in a barren draw last season.
