East Bengal defeated United Sports Club 3-0 at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday evening to finish runners-up in the 2013-14 Airtel I-League.
There were no goals in the first half but a howler from United SC custodian Abhijit Das allowed Abhishek Das to open the scoring for East Bengal in the second period. Late goals from Edeh Chidi and Semilen Doungel made it a comfortable victory for Armando Colaco’s side.
East Bengal finish second for the third time in four seasons with 43 points from 24 outings while United SC end in tenth spot with 26 points.
The first real chance of the game fell to East Bengal as Cavin Lobo’s cross found Ryuji Sueoka free in the box but the Japanese headed wide.
United SC had two decent openings in quick succession with Biswajit Biswas first going close after some nice work by Eric Brown while Mohammed Rafique failed to shoot properly despite only having East Bengal custodian Gurpreet Sandhu to beat following a solo run from Waheed Adenkule.
The first 15 minutes remained entertaining with Lobo and Lalrindika combing well but the latter’s shot found the side netting. For the rest of the half though both teams cancelled each other out and were only limited to long range efforts.
United SC keeper Abhijit had to make a good save though to deny Chidi with Lalrindika blasting the rebound over the bar.
It remained a tight contest in the second half also with East Bengal only troubling Abhijit from a Shylo Malswamtluanga cross which the United SC custodian didn’t gather cleanly and had to rely on his defenders to make the clearance.
United SC’s best chance of the game came close to the hour mark when Surajit Bose’s shot fell kindly for Biswajit Biswas in the six-yard box but he scuffed his effort while Brown failed to hit the target.
East Bengal were not really looking like scoring but broke the deadlock after a horrendous error from Abhijit. Abhishek Das played in a harmless cross into the box but Abhijit failed to collect it properly and eventually put the ball into the back of his own net.
It was an embarrassing moment for Abhijit and he nearly conceded a second when Lobo took a shot from inside the box but it was straight at the United SC goalkeeper.
East Bengal started to drop deep and allowed the purple shirts to dominate possession but they failed to test Sandhu with Brown not even hitting the target with his long-range efforts.
Chidi finally sealed the points for the red-and-gold brigade by scoring past Abhijit with a well-placed shot from inside the box.
The third goal came from a counter attack with Lobo picking out an unmarked Doungel and the East Bengal substitute easily found the back of the net.
