PANJIM: Calangute Association scored a solitary goal victory against Churchill Brothers in the Goa Pro League match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday evening. Mayur Shelar was the only goal scorer of the match for Calangute Association.
Either of the teams kicked of and looked for nothing but a win that would boost confidence and set up their momentum in the tournament.
Churchill Brothers got the match underway in the first half. Both the teams played an equal possesion half with rarely any attempts at goal. But both the teams defence were on their heels at all times in the first half.
Calangute Association’s defender made an overhead clearance to ward off a dangerous looking cross from Churchill Brothers Sevlon Cardozo to team mate Manas Sarkar. At the end of the first 45 both the teams were tied at 0-0.
In the second half, Calangute Association’s Dominic Fernandes had a clear chance to score 25 yards out of goal but Churchill Brothers made an amazing leap to keep his shot out of goal.
Moments later Calangute Association had yet another attempt at goal via Omkar More after a delicious looking cross from his teammate Bersal Viegas but he saw his header miss the mark by a few inches.
In another move by Calangute Association, Churchill Brothers’ Rahul Kumar was alert enough to clear a cross to Omkar More.
Fourteen minutes into the second half Calangute Association finally get the goal that they had been searching for through Mayur Shelar who brilliantly shrugged off his defender to tap in the ball past Churchill Brothers keeper Ricardo Cardozo from a corner that was taken by Joslon Pereira.
Myron Fernandes had an opportunity to double his team’s lead but instead he missed an open goal scoring opportunity to shoot it in the stands.
Calangute Association’s Kouamme Joseph was a rock in their defence after he changed his position after starting the match as a defensive midfielder, he foiled Churchill Brothers attacks as and when they happened.
In the dying minutes of the match Churchill Brothers were denied an equaliser after the linesman deemed Kartik G., the goal scorer to have been offside much to the disapproval of the Churchill Brothers players and coach.
