PANJIM: Spirited Dempo Sports Club scored two late goals as they edged past Vasco Sports Club 3-2 in a nail-biting encounter in the Goa Professional league match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Tuesday.
Vasco SC had the pace and definitely were a better side in the first quarter of the match wherein they managed to slot a goal past the golden eagles through Schubert Pereira (16’) and defended the lead until the breather.
The Golden Eagles were shocked as Clive Coelho sent in a perfect ball to Beneston Barreto who slotted the ball home.
The Port Towner’s fell back midway through the first half in order to defend their lead and managed to keep Dempo SC players at bay until coach Samir Naik introduced Jaison Vaz in place of Latesh Mandrekar and Kapil Hoble in place of Desmond Pereira.
The goals eagles then pressurised the rival from the flanks and took full control of the game.
Kapil showed his calibre as he fired shots and crossed from the right flank one of which hit the bottom corner while the other cross received a poor response from Beevan D’Mello.
Post resumption, Dempo SC came back stronger and constantly raided the rival defence in hope to find the equaliser. Their hard work paid off in the 58th minute after Vasco’s Treyson brought down Beevan outside the box. The brilliant free-kick taken by Mario Mascarenhas was the leveller for Dempo SC.
The Port Towners went all out in order to find the lead and managed to get the goal after Minesh headed home Micky Fernandes’ free-kick to make it 2-1.
Demo SC went on to net in yet another goal through Beevan who tapped in Jaison’s cross.
When it looked like the match would end in a draw, the Golden Eagles scored once again through Beevan after they were awarded a spot kick in the dying minutes of the match.
