Kolkata: Defending champions Atletico de Kolkata became the first team to qualify for the semifinals in the second season of Indian Super League with a comprehensive 4-1 win at the Vivekananda Yubabharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Friday.
Iain Edward Hume’s (9′, 48′ & 83′) second hat-trick of the season and a late goal from Dejan Lekic (90+4′) proved to be enough for the home side to move into the semifinals with 23 points from 13 matchs. However, the visitors did score a consolation goal through their marquee man Adrian Mutu (86′).
Both teams went into the crucial game with a strong motivation for win. A evenlly contested
first-half brought the absolutely best out of the teams. Pune did enjoy more of ball possession but it was Kolkata, who were more clinical in front of the goal.
The home side got the breakthrough early in the game from Hume. Jaime Gavilan found Izumi Arata with a long ball and Arata passed it for Hume, who found the back of the net in the 9th minute, however, it looked bit controvertial as according to some the Canadian was in offside position.
Pune came close to finding the equaliser with Mutu but the former Chelsea striker saw his shot from Tuncay Sanli’s pass came off the post in the 22nd minute.
After change of ends Kolkata seized complete control over the proceedings. The hosts doubled their advantage within four minutes into the half when Borja Fernandez tossed the ball inside the Pune box and Hume converted from it with an acrobatic strike.
Thereafter, the former Leicester City striker went on to complete his second hat-trick of the season from a Sameehg Doutie pass in the 83rd minute, in doing so Hume became the only second player to score two hat-tricks in ISL beside Chennaiyin’s Stiven Mendoza.
However, Pune did not go down without a fight and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 86th
minute when Mutu pulled a goal back for the visitors. Meanwhile, Kolkata added their fourth in the stoppage time through substitute Dejan Lekic to record their first ever win over FC Pune City.
