GOA: Bengal have qualified for the semifinals of the Santosh Trophy after five years under Mohammedan Sporting Club defender Rana Gharami’s captaincy. Bengal have made into the knockout phase of the competition with a game in hand after Meghalaya beat defending champions Services 2-0 on Saturday.
Bengal, are on top of the table in Group A with 7 points from 3 games, would take on Meghalaya in their final group stage game on March 20 at Tilak Maidan.
Interestingly, the 25-year-old also captains Mohammedan Sporting Club and under his leadership the Black Panthers became runners-up of Calcutta Football League after 8 years before lifting the title in Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup after 36 years in 2016.
Last time when Bengal were in the knockout phase in 2011 they eventually lifted the title after beating Manipur 2-1 in final.
