Mumbai: Mumbai FC beat Air India 1-0 in the final at the RCF Sports Complex in Mumbai, to clinch the title in 109th RCF Nadkarni Cup 2015 here on Monday.
The all important goal came through former India international Steven Dias, who struck the lone goal of the game at the stoppage time of first-half that proved to be enough for Mumbai FC to clinch their overall third RCF Nadkarni Cup title and first since 2011.
Mumbai FC, who came into the finale having defeated Mumbai Customs 3-2 in semifinal, had several chances in front of Air India goalmouth through Eric Brown and Cletus Paul, but Air India’s last defender Ubaid C.K. stood firm thwarting each of Mumbai FC’s attacks. However, Air India’s resistance was finally broken in the injury time of first-half when Mumbai FC skipper Taisuke Matsuge tried to lob the ball over Ubaid, the Malayali keeper did make an intitial save but Dias converted from the rebound against his former club.
Air India had their chances to score the equaliser in the second-half, but some strong defensive work from Mumbai FC did not allowed The Pilots to script a comeback. However, Air India did get some consolation when their captain Vijith Shetty adjudged as the player of the tournament.
