GOA: Mizoram marched into the semi-finals of the 71st Santosh Trophy as they produced an comprehensive performance to ground Railways 5-1 in a Group B league encounter at GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Tuesday.

Needing a win to ensure it’s semifinal entry, Mizoram — thanks to a brilliant allround performance — found goals at regular intervals to emerge as the deserving winners.

Mizoram took the lead through Lalchhuanawma (24th minute) before Jitendra Pal (42nd) restored parity for Railways. However, Mizoram ran riot in a one-sided second half as Lalrinpuia (60th & 82nd) scored a brace while Lalrinchhana (72nd) and Lalsangbera (78th) also put their stings upon Railways.

Elsewhere, Maharashtra failed to progress to the semi-finals despite winning their last league match 2-0 against Kerala at Tilak Maidan in Vasco.

Maharashtra — who came into the game needing a win to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stages — propelled by two strikes in either half by Vaibhav Shetty (34th) and Shrikant Veeramallu (59th). However, as it turned out they would have crashed out regardless of their result after Mizoram beat Railways in group’s other game.

Now on 23rd March, Group A winners Bengal take on Group B runners-up Mizoram in the first semi-final, at 3:00 PM, with the Group B winners Kerala playing Group A runners-up Goa at 7:00 PM. Both matches will be played at GMC Stadium in Bambolim.
