KOLKATA: Ronald Singh did the star turn for Southern Samity as his second half strike proved decisive in his team’s 1-0 win over Lonestar Kashmir FC in an I-League 2nd Division Final Round match at Barasat Stadium.
The all important goal came in the 58th minute, which ultimately turned out to be the match winner and helped Southern Samity to register their first win of the final round on Thursday.
Southern Samity began the game in attacking mode and created a couple of close chances early on. While Basanta Singh did well to get into spaces, the winger lacked the killer finish in the rival box.
As the half progressed, Southern Samity continued to exert pressure on the Lonestar Kashmir defense and Odafa Okoile, Pankaj Moula and Basanta all threatened the rival goal with well orchestrated raids. However, Lonestar Kashmir, on the other hand, defended deep and did not allowed their rival attackers to maneuver inside their territory as both sides went into the breather tied at goalless.
Needing a goal, Southern Samity came out all guns blazing in the second half as they attacked by pushing high up. The pressure paid dividend as the hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Lonestar Kashmir keeper Harpeet Singh parried Basanta’s effort straight into the path of an onrushing Ronald who made no mistake from close range.
Having taken the lead, Southern Samity got a much needed confidence boost and they increased their pressure up front dominating the game entirely. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities in the final quarter, once again it was lack of finishing that prevented a bigger scoreline as the game ended 1-0 in Southern Samity ’s favour.
