KOCHI: Spain eased their way into the semifinals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 with a 3-1 victory over Iran in Kochi on Sunday.
Spain came onto the pitch with a clear mindset. The European champions studied the Iranian side to perfection and Santi Denia’s squad got the upper hand.
The first chance came about in the 10th minute when Cesar Gelabert cross a ball to Abel Ruiz, who tried to shoot on Iran custodian Ali Gholam Zadeh. Two minutes later the action was repeated and Ruiz netted the opener.
Spain did not lose grip and calmly took over the match with shots by Ferran Torres and Sergio Gomez.
Once the match resumed, Iran kicked things up a notch and pressured at the top. The Spanish side would have to struggle a little to find spaces in the opponent’s aread.
Then, in the 61st minute, Ferran picked up a ball, sent it to Gomez and the 2-0 was set. Iran had a chance moments later, but Spain stole the ball through Mohamed Moukhliss, who delivered for Ferran scoring the 3-0.
With a clear disadvantage, Iran went for the attack and after several chances substitute Saeid Karimi netted the first goal for Iran in the 69th minute.
Finally the scored was set 3-1 for Spain and a ticket to the semifinals against Mali.
